Jesus Is The Way…To True Identity
Over the past few months, Jesus has taught me more about himself than I have learned in the last 9 years as a Christian. Furthermore, I’m learning to actually believe Him and walk in the truth of who He is. On this other side of confusion, frustration, and loneliness the most important lesson that I’ve learned is Jesus Is The Way.
Many of us have heard that phrase, but what does it really mean? “Way” has several definitions:
- A direction or vicinity
- A passage or progress on a course
- A path or course leading from one place to another
For the sake of this post I will focus on that last definition, “a path or course leading from one place to another.”
Jesus is the path that leads from one place to another. Specifically, Jesus is the path that leads us from being far from God to being close to God; He leads us from being far from God’s heart to close to God’s heart. There is no other path leading to the Father’s heart other than Jesus because “no one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.” Jesus is the way to the Father’s heart because He is near to it.
No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.
John 1:18
And when we are near to the Father’s heart we find the answers to our soul’s calls and the reconnection back to our origin.
All of our souls inevitably ask the questions of identity, who am I, where do I come from?
Christ answers: “God created everything through me…”
God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.
John 1:3
We were created through Christ. The crux of our identity, the basis of our being created, is Christ.
Personally, so much of my inner turmoil comes from being unsure of myself, what I’m capable of, and how I’m perceived. But when I turn to Christ, He reminds me of who I am and where I come from. The truth is, I was created through Christ as a human being AND I was recreated through Christ as a Christian. He holds the key to my identity because He is my identity.
This is the truth for you too, whether you are a Christian or not. All things were created through Him (and you are included in all things), so to look elsewhere for your identity is fruitless, futile, and lifeless.
My identity is not in my relationships, my jobs, my interests, my sexuality, my weaknesses, my income, my appearance, or my talents; I do not find my identity in myself. And I’ve spent so much time searching myself in order to find myself, yet I keep coming up empty.
This is why: I didn’t create myself.
I was created by the most beautifully sublime Creator. And he calls me away from me and towards him. Not to take life from me, but to give me life itself. Not to take my identity from me, but to give my true identity.
And he’s calling you too. He is the way to your identity; He is your identity.
Do you perceive it?
